Paratransit

Planning a paratransit shopping trip: bags, timing, and the pickup point

A shopping trip works better when the rider confirms the entrance, return reservation, carrying plan, and what can travel safely.

A grocery store or shopping center may have several entrances, crowded loading areas, and purchases that are difficult to manage at pickup. The reservation is only one part of the plan. The rider should understand the program’s rules, choose a precise meeting point, and make sure purchases can be handled safely.

Reserve the full trip, including the return

Follow the applicable paratransit program’s reservation process for both directions. Provide the destination address and the entrance or pickup zone the program accepts. Ask how pickup windows and return reservations work for that program.

Do not assume a vehicle will wait during shopping or that an outbound trip automatically creates a return. If plans change, use the program’s official process to update or cancel the affected reservation.

Pick an entrance that can be found twice

Choose a specific door, numbered entrance, pharmacy side, customer-service area, or designated loading zone when the program permits it. Large shopping centers may have the same street address for several storefronts.

Confirm the return pickup location before entering the store. A driver cannot reliably search every curb or parking row. Keep the reservation contact available in case the store directs customers to another exit.

Plan purchases around what the rider can manage

Review the program’s current rules for packages and personal items. The rider or approved companion should be able to manage purchases according to those rules without blocking aisles, ramps, lifts, doors, or securement areas.

Use smaller bags, a personal cart, or another arrangement only if the program allows it and the rider can control it safely. Do not expect the driver to carry items into a residence or provide shopping assistance unless that service is specifically included.

Allow time for checkout without creating an open return

Estimate shopping and checkout time, then choose a return arrangement that fits the program’s reservation options. Busy lines can vary, so decide in advance what the rider will do if shopping finishes early or runs late.

A late shopping trip does not automatically move the return reservation. Contact the provider through the correct channel as soon as a change is known. Keep any companion informed about the confirmed plan.

Check mobility needs and the path home

Tell the reservation team about the wheelchair, walker, service animal, companion, or other trip details the program requests. At home, make sure the rider can move from the vehicle meeting point with the allowed purchases.

Before leaving, confirm both pickup points, reservation windows, contact numbers, and the carrying plan. Contact Cathay for help understanding the transportation logistics of a planned paratransit trip.
